When one thinks of a basement, there are several unflattering things that can come to mind. Piles of boxes pushed into every available crevice, old furniture from the last century that the homeowner couldn’t even give away for free, and dusty holiday decorations, to name a few. This need not be the fate of your basement, however; in fact, something can be done about it. How about converting it into a custom home theater?

Think about it; no longer would you have to deal with overpriced popcorn, sticky floors, and rude fellow patrons who treat the theater like their own little amusement park. There would be no worries about getting to the theater on time, only to discover that the show has sold out. When you’re ready to start putting it together, take into consideration that noise that can be created from the theater. To prevent this, install materials that will absorb the sounds, such as carpeting, along with fabric panels for the wall. It is not necessary to splurge for the most expensive lamps on the market, but keep in mind that proper lighting is important to add to the atmosphere of your custom finished basement. Be sure to select comfortable seating and keep them in sight of your TV screen. Putting in a snack area so everyone can pick something out to eat and drink while watching the movie is also an excellent idea. Perchance most important of all, make sure that what you’re adding and building is not against any codes.

From Junk Room to Laundry Room
By Kymberly Taylor

The Problem:
Publisher Veronica Tovey has a 342-square-foot cluttered basement laundry room that is no longer functional. She envisions a laundry room with a pleasant look and feel, good lighting, and lots of storage. She wants an area where she can repot her plants and nurture others under a grow light as well as store items she uses on a seasonal basis.

The Solution:
Mike Scarpignato, owner of Rendition Builders Custom Remodeling, suggests giving the illusion of more space by covering wires, pipes, and vents with a drywall ceiling. Cinder blocks can be dry walled over and then painted.  Electrical boxes can be hidden along with the hot water heater by sliding paneled doors, mounted and framed so they appear recessed into the wall.

To deter a sense of clutter, he uses a minimal color palette composed simply of bright white for trim and cabinets and dove grey for walls. Granite “uba-tuba” counters with storage both above and below are ideal for working with plants and in the “potting area.” He advises installing a grow light over one of the counters and adding a sink. Twelve-inch earth-toned tiles over the concrete floor add an attractive finish to a room equipped with plenty of storage, counter space, and light.
